There are a wealth of resources available for free on the Internet that can benefit the math classroom. In this session we'll explore the resources available on free sites such as YouTube, Texas Instruments, NCTM, Open Courseware and OpenText projects, and Merlot. In addition, we'll look at "social" content tools and content creation resources which are free including GraphCalc, Hot Potatoes, Photostory, BubbleShare, Jing, CamStudio, and more. We'll also look at a variety of rich contextual resources which can be used in the teaching of mathematics topics.

Graphing Calculator

In this two day workshop we'll cover a wide variety of activities and training for the TI-84 plus graphing calculator. We'll explore activities such as Movie Lines, Paying for your Wheels, and Domain Representations. We'll also look at activities available from Texas Instruments.

Tuesday

Supporting Math Teaching with the Internet

Download the PowerPoint from this workshop or Download the PDF of the PowerPoint

In this session we will focus on sharing content with students via the Internet. Through sites and tools such as MyMathLab, Moodle, Jing, and Epsilen you can continue the great conversations outside of the walls of the classroom. We will spend approximately 20 minutes exploring the general structure of these types of sites and then spend the remaining time looking at the specifics of each of these sites as they relate to working in your classroom. Most of these sites operate in a similar manner so it is hoped that looking at them together and identifying common themes and tools will allow you to transfer this knowledge on to other similar sites in the future if needed.

Graphing Calculator

Today we'll focus on creating resources for your students to use with the TI-84 using the GraphLink and computer software as well as discuss programming on the TI-84 and the benefits of using programming and downloaded programs as a teaching and assessment method

Wednesday

Smart Notebook

Download the PowerPoint or Download the PDF of the PowerPoint

In this two part session we'll explore the interactive elements of the Smart Notebook software and explore how this software can be used to teach Algebra. We'll begin with a look at the Lesson Activity Toolkit which is a free download/install from Smart. Specific exercises we'll look at include:

  • Big Apple or Bust - the relationship between charts, tables, and graphs
  • Polynomial Puzzler
  • Focused look at the "Activities" on the Illuminations web site

Excel

In this two part session we'll cover methods for using Excel and other free spreadsheet tools in your classroom and with your students. Free options such as Google Spreadsheets will be demonstrated so that you can provide students with an alternative if they don't have Microsoft Office software at home. Specific exercises we'll look at include:

  • Bungee Barbie
  • Bouncing Tennis Ball

Come ready to have fun these two days as we explore!

Thursday

Smart Notebook

Download the PowerPoint or Download the PDF of the PowerPoint

We'll continue today's session with more information on the SmartNotebook. Today we will also include information on the SmartNotebook student edition. Specifically today we'll demonstrate Equations of Attack.

Excel/Technology

Excel Resourcecs for teaching math

We'll continue the session from yesterday by looking at the Egg Launch Contest and Hanging Chains activities that allow us to explore quadratic functions with Excel

Friday

EasiTeach

We used the Getting Started tutorial available within EasiTeach today so there was no PowerPoint.

We will close out the week with a look at another interactive classroom presentation tool - the EasiTeach. We'll cover starting up the EasiTeach, creating, saving, and reusing Easibooks, creating animations, linking pages and files, and using the math content pak for EasiTeach.
