Classes
For the summer semester 2009, I am teaching three classes for the Ivy Tech Richmond campus. To view the syllabus for each class, click the link below:
Classes begin on June 8, 2009. Students enrolled in my classes should get their books and other course materials in advance of the semester start date. Below is the text of an email I sent to all enrolled students on May 20, 2009. The individual emails for each class were customized - the text below was made a bit more generic, but still includes all the relevant details. Textbook information for each class can be found in the syllabus above.
**SUMMER 2009 STUDENT WELCOME LETTER**
Hello everyone. Welcome to <COURSE NAME> for the Summer 2009 term. Attached you should find your syllabus for this course. It contains detailed information about how this course is run.
This course begins on June 8, 2009 and ends on July 31, 2009. The shortened eight week term makes for a very intense learning experience. Since we have no time to spare in the eight week term, it's extremely important that you get your textbooks for the class BEFORE the class begins. The textbook for this class is called Intermediate Algebra. The authors are Michael Sullivan III and Katherine Struve. The text is available used from the Ivy Tech bookstore at http://www.ivytech.bkstr.com. To find the book quickly go to that website and do the following:
1. Click Textbooks on the left.
2. In the drop down boxes that come up, under Term select Summer 2009.
3. You should now see a Search box on the right that says CRN - enter the CRN number for your course and then click the Search button.
The page lists the required materials for the course. If you already have a calculator, you may use the one you already have. Textbooks sold on the web site also include MyMathLab access codes. I know that many of you want to try to buy the book less expensively somewhere else which is fine. I also wanted to let you know that if you wish to use an electronic book, the MyMathLab access code includes an electronic copy of the textbook at no extra charge. If you wish to buy just the MyMathLab access kit from the bookstore, you may do so from http://www.bkstr.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=21904&productId=13832673&catalogId=10001&productStoreId=10053. (Please note - if that link doesn't work, go to the Bookstore web site listed above and type MyMathLab in the Advanced Search box on the left-hand side of the screen. Then select the MyMathLab item which is on the second row. It was listed for $71.33 when I looked it up.
The syllabus includes instructions for setting up your MyMathLab account which you can do as soon as you have your MyMathLab access code. If you wish to get started early, this is the best way to do so. The calendar in the attached syllabus details the assignments you will be doing this semester.
Please note that I will be out of the country from May 26 - June 6 so will not be responding to email during that time. If you send me an email, I will respond to it when I return on June 7. I will be back and ready for class to start on June 8 though.
I look forward to working with all of you this summer. Get those materials ordered now so we can start successfully in the class by June 8!
