Less than two million of the 16 million American
veterans
of World War II remain with us.
We must act soon to show these heroes our gratitude
Will You Help Honor Our Hoosier Veterans? This is your last chance to do so through Hoosier Honor Flight!
Hoosier Honor Flight, Inc. is a non profit organization created solely to honor southern Indiana war veterans for their sacrifices. We fly our heroes to Washington, DC to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – WW II and Korean War survivors – and to veterans of other wars who have a terminal illness. The first Honor Flight, from which grew the Honor Flight Network, flew in May 2005 with six small planes flying 12 WW II veterans departing Springfield, Ohio. Hoosier Honor Flight is a certified “hub” of the national Honor Flight Network.
Monroe County veterans’ organizations, other organizations and businesses, and dedicated individuals joined forces to provide the first Hoosier Honor Flight on 12 November, 2008. 39 WWII veterans and one Korean War veteran (who had a terminal illness) thoroughly enjoyed visiting the national WWII Memorial, Lincoln and FDR memorials, Vietnam and Korean war memorials, crossing the Memorial Bridge over the Potomac, circling the Marine Memorial, and transferring from our chartered tour bus to our chartered “Tourmobile” to tour Arlington National Cemetery, see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and laying a Hoosier Honor Flight wreath at the Tomb. The second Hoosier Honor Flight flew on 22 April 2009 directly to Baltimore-Washington International Airport from the Monroe County Airport aboard a chartered 737 with 112 veterans and 60 guardians. The third Hoosier Honor Flight took 36 veterans (including our first two lady veterans) and 19 guardians on 21 October 2009. The fourth, and last, Hoosier Honor Flight is projected for late April 2010.
Almost all of these veterans would not have had the opportunity to see their Washington, DC memorials without your support through Hoosier Honor Flight. WWII veterans, Korean War veterans, or veterans of any war with a terminal illness may register for a free flight by telephoning (812) 336-5574, mention “Honor Flight veteran”, and provide the veteran’s name, contact telephone number, and valid mailing address. We will mail a paper application form to the veteran, but the veteran’s “place in line” will be established by the date of his or her telephone call.
