The Ivy Tech Bloomington Campus has selected The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls as its common reading project for the 2009-10 school year.

Purpose Statement
The purpose of the Ivy Tech Community College common reading initiative is to create a shared intellectual experience uniting all members of the academic community—students, faculty, and staff—with the goal of involving students in academic life beyond the classroom and enhancing student success.

The common reading experience is designed to raise awareness of diversity issues, create a platform for examining values and ethics, and encourage critical thinking. 

The chosen text will be made available to all first-year students and integrated into both academic coursework and out-of-class events.

Google Books says The Glass Castle is a "story of triumph against all odds."

As a child, Jeannette Walls experienced poverty, abuse, and betrayal while growing up in a dysfunctional family with a neglectful mother and an alcoholic father.

Reading materials on these family issues and more are now available in the Library, Room A200. Please stop by!
