CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Introduces the physical components and operation of microcomputers.
Focuses on computer literacy and provides hands on training in four areas of
microcomputer applications software: word processing, electronic
spreadsheets, databases management and presentation software. Use of a
professional business integrated applications package is emphasized.
MAJOR COURSE
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course the student
will be able to:

Identify the principal hardware components
of personal computers and describe their functions. |

Understand basic computer
terminology |
| 3. |
Explain the relationship of
computer hardware to software |
| 4. |
Power up a personal computer and
use Window and its utilities to work with disks and files including
displaying folders; copying, creating and deleting files and
folders; sand controlling the operations of the computer. |

Use word processing applications
software-Microsoft Word-to perform the following tasks:
Create and edit text
Save and retrieve a document
Format, edit and print a document
Center, underline, bold and indent text
Insert images into a document
Use the search and replace functions
Create multi-page documents
Use page setup to set margins, tabs, and indents
Use paragraph formatting to set line spacing
Use spell and grammar checker

software-Microsoft Excel-to perform the following tasks: Format a
worksheet; create simple formulas; use basic worksheet functions
such as: SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, MIN, IF. |

modify a database structure; enter records in a database; create
reports; sort and index a database file. |

METHOD OF EVALUATION: STUDENT PERFORMANCE WILL BE EVALUATED THROUGH THE USE
OF ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING: QUIZZES, EXAMINATIONS, PROJECTS,
ASSIGNMENTS, FINISHED PRODUCTS, PRESENTATIONS, CLASS PARTICIPATION, AND
OTHER EVALUATIVE EXERCISES DESIGNED TO ENSURE THAT THE COURSE OBJECTIVES ARE
MET.
GRADING CRITERIA
LAB ASSIGNMENTS: 50% You must complete 28 assignments for this course.
These documents you will submit will begin with the Word 1 Chapter. Page
numbers for those assignments will be listed in the syllabus. If you wish
to do more than the assignments you can do an additional Mastery Assessment
assignment for each chapter. The list of possible extra credit assignment
is listed after the Suggested Weekly Calendar of Activities. You will
receive extra credit points for the additional assignments. However, you
cannot increase your final grade more than one letter grade through extra
credit.
