- Podcasting: Grab Your Mike and Go - http://mayitpleasethecourt.com
Thinking about adding a blog to spice up your company website? Those
often snarky online diaries may seem cutting edge to you, but they are
really so 2004. What? You don't have one yet? OK, get your blog up and
runing tout de suite and then think about adding a podcast, an Internet
radio file that customers or employees can download from your site. All
it takes is a microphone and free editing software that's only a Google
search away. The big guys are already doing it. At Fastlane, the
corporate blogging site for General Motors, car enthusiasts can
download mini radio shows about cool machines like the Corvette Z06.
In July, some 70,000 podcasts were downloaded, according to Michael
Wiley, director of new media at GM. "I think the opportunity is
unlimited," Wiley says. "They are cheap to produce, and you put
together a pretty good product with even rudimentary facilities."
But what if you're not a behemoth like GM? The benefits apply to
organizations of any size. "It's affordable 'narrow-casting', feasible
to do whether your audience is 10 or 1,000 people," says communicatios
consultant Neville Hobson. It can pay off big time. Attorney Craig
Williams says his blog (http://mayitpleasethecourt.com)
and podcast have generated close to $1 milliom worth of client
referrals since they started three years ago. He thinks of his site as
"my hand-shake to the world."

Artifical
life forms inhabiting virtual worlds are nothing new to fans of
computer games like The sims, but rewiring artifical life for
scientific research is a new frontier. The New and Emergent Worlds
Through Individual, Evolutionary and Social Learning (NEW TIES) project
is developing a computer-simulated society, observed by experts, which
may eventually benefit information technologies, computing systems, AI
and linguistics. Backed by a group of European universities, NEW TIES
will place 1,000 agents in a simulated world on a 50-node network, with
the goal of seeing them evolve a culture. "The project can help us find
out about the factors necessary for certain attributes of society to
come into being," says Professor Ben Paechter of Scotland's Napier
University. Paechter adds that agents will start with few skills and
will need to learn how to acquire food and to communicate. their
language will evolve from scratch, says Dr. Paul Vogt of Tilburg
University in Netherlands. As to how NEW TIES might benefit real
socities, Paechter posits that is makes otherwise impossible expriments
possible. For example, the agents could be stripped of key resources in
their environment, and the effects of the hardship studied in ways that
would be inappropriate in real society. You can track the virtual
culture at http://www.new-ties.org.

Technology Tips
- Free Control a window withoout the Keyboard
You
would click on the visible part of the windoe and press Alt-Spacebar to
bring up its system menu. Then press S (for size), press the right
arrow key to select the right-hand edge of the window, and press the
left arrow key repeatedly. when the window is reduced to a manageable
size, press Enter.
To move a window whose title bar is not
visible, click the window or its corresponding taskbar button and again
press Alt-Spacebar. even if the window is entirely off-screen, not
visible at all, the system menu will appear as close to it as possible,
so you can use the menu's location as a pointer to the "lost" window.
This time press M (for Move), use the arrow keys to bring the window
back into view and press Enter when you have it back under control.
- Internet Explorer's Kiosk Mode
Internet
Explorer offers a Full Screen mode, invoked by pressing F11. Pressing
F11 again restores the normal view. You can launch IE in its Kiosk mode
by simply entering iexplore -k in the Start menu's run diaog, appending
the URL of the Web site you want it to open. Alt-F4 or Ctrl-W would
close the Kiosk-mode window.
To lock down these subversive key
combinations using restrictions in Registry, launch RegEdit from the
Start menu's Run dialog; navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft Internet
Explorer\Restrictions; and find or create each of the following DWORD
values, setting its data to 1 to enable the restriction:
- NoBrowserClose (disables closing the browser window)
- NoBrowserContectMenu (disables right-click contect menu)
- NoFileOpen (disables use of Ctrl-O or Ctrl-L to launch an arbitrary URL)
- NoOpenInNewWnd (disables opening a link in a new window via Ctrl-N or Shift-Click)
Users can enter Ctrl-Alt-Del to end the process.
- Make a Shorter Link/URL: http://makeashorterlink.com/contact.php
AVG Anti-Virus Software
Given the nature
of this learning environment - we are all online together - viruses can
be particularly troublesome. You may install the following software
listed below, but ALL students should have an up-to-date copy of Norton
or McAfee anti-virus software on their PCs. A good place to start is
the CNET Viruses & Security Alerts Forum (shown below), where you can post queries, browse the latest topics, or search for help on a particularly vexing problem.
Best vendor sites
- US-CERT:
The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) provides
detailed listings of a wide range of Internet-related threats and
solutions.
- McAfee Threat Center:
This well-organized site lists the latest malware threats, and offers
tips to avoid phishing scams and spam. You’ll have to weed through some
McAfee marketing drivel, but there’s a wealth of good advice here.
- Symantec Security Response:
The Threat Explorer section features good spyware and adware primers,
plus plenty of nitty-gritty details for removing Registry values added
by malware programs, such as the Spyware.Canary keystroke logger.
- Secunia:
This IT security provider’s site is a timely resource for news and
patches for Registry bugs, and other threats. It’s updated frequently
and offers fixes for the latest outbreaks.
- Trend Micro: A comprehensive resource for the discriminating malware hunter. Its Virus Encyclopedia, for instance, lets you search by “effect” (e.g., restarts system), malware type (e.g., boot Trojan), and other criteria.
- AVG Anti-Virus: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Also here is a link to Microsoft's new (free) anti spy ware software.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
- indows Defender
is Microsoft’s free anti-spyware software. Like every good spyware
detector, it provides real-time support–essential for stopping spyware
from being installed in the first place.
- Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy are popular choices, since they’re both free and very effective.
- Spyware Blaster
is a great free program that helps prevent adware and spyware from
installing itself in the first place. It can’t remove adware/spyware
from an infected PC, but it’s still a great addition to your
anti-malware arsenal.
- McAfee SiteAdvisor
is a free utility that provides safety ratings for thousands of Web
sites. If you try to connect to a site on McAfee’s banned list–such as
a site known to contain spyware–a SiteAdvisor warning page appears
instead and advises you to stay away.
- Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic - http://www.free-av.com/
- AVG Free Anti-Virus for Windows,
a gratis version of Grisoft’s antivirus package, is available for home
users, but not for businesses or non-profits. You’ll get better support
and configuration tools, though, if you buy the Professional version.
- Zone Labs has a free firewall
called ZoneAlarm that’s quite good, although it lacks some helpful
tools, such as the ability to automatically provide Internet-access
rules for popular programs. And Cloudmark has a free trial copy of its Anti-Fraud Toolbar, which guards against phishing attempts.
- Even
if you scan your computer for viruses weekly, a second opinion is
always a good idea. We recommend that you run a monthly scan with a
Web-based service like Trend Micro’s Housecall. It’s free, and it could catch bugs your primary security program missed.
- Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
- McAfee SiteAdvisor
Some unscrupulous Web sites are designed to infect your PC with adware
automatically when you visit them. So when you use a search engine, the
results you get may include such dangerous sites. How can you tell if a
site has spyware or other threats? Run McAfee SiteAdvisor,
a free utility that provides safety ratings for thousands of sites.
Whether you’re using Google, MSN, or Yahoo, SiteAdvisor’s ratings
appear next to the search results (shown above). Scandoo provides a similar service.
- WinPatrol - http://www.winpatrol.com/
WinPatrol
uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks and violations of your
computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard
drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes
snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any
changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing
dangerous new programs while others download new reference files.
- Paretologic: http://www.paretologic.com/
SpywareDaily.com
educates users on best practices of protecting themselves from spyware,
adware, Internet threats, and other tecnology-related intrusions. The
blog, from anti-spyware company Paretologic Inc. (www.paretologic.com),
features FAQs; a short, impressive list of links to other Net
security-related sites; and a collection of articles on topics like
spyware, viruses, and how to protect your computer. Other areas of
niterest covered include mobile phone viruses, wireless security, and
hackers.
- JavaCoolSoftware - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com

Audio/Video
- Audacity 1.2.3 (Free)
Audacity
isn't just for recording streaming audio; it can record anything coming
into your computer, so get an audio cable and connect your audio-out
and audio-in jacks, and you're all set.
- For Microsoft Windows, consider downloading FreeRip, a freeware application that lets you save audio CD tracks as WAV, MP3, or Ogg Vorbis audio files.
- Audio Mixer
- One application to examine is Tactile12000, a free, open-source
program that lets you DJ music in the WAV and MP3 formats using a
visual, tactile interface--and it runs on Windows and Mac OS computers.
You drag the files as records onto the record players, click Play, and
then drag sliders around to fade between songs and even play them at
the same time.

education to prepare presentations that are loaded onto a managed
learning environment as part of e-learning.
SMIRK enables
anybody to produce accessible (c) presentations that can be streamed
over the web. The presentations are produced at the desk without any
technician support. Audio, graphics and captioning are the basic
building blocks but other elements such as Flash movies, video and
links (internal and external) are easy to include.
- Accessibility in Distance Education Web site, University of Maryland
University College (UMUC) - http://www.umuc.edu/ade
UMUC's new Accessibility in Distance Education (ADE) Web site has been
designed to meet the needs of faculty who are teaching students with
disabilities in the online environment. The ADE site explains
accessibility problems that students with disabilities are likely to
encounter in navigating Web-based resources, and shows faculty members
how they can address and resolve these problems. The site also seeks
to provide faculty with information about different types of
disabilities, relevant laws, and best accessibility practices.
After viewing the ADE site faculty members will have a comprehensive
understanding of how the online environment impacts people with
disabilities and how they can address accessibility issues in online
courses. The site provides numerous accessibility scenarios and shows
ways that faculty can work with the available support services to
resolve problems. There are wise words of advice from faculty members
and students who participated in this project, and a special section
on "Best Practices" shows how learning components ranging from
websites to multimedia lectures can be made accessible.
The ADE Web site has been produced by the Center for the Virtual
University (CVU) and the Center for Accessibility in Distance
> Education (CADE), in the Office of Distance Education and Lifelong
Learning at UMUC. The site has been funded with generous support from

The
Ethics Scenarios Game, is a fun, interactive way to learn about

teaches what the appropriate response should be when faced with such a
dilemma. You will be given a "Brief Case" pertaining to a potential
ethical dilemma at work and then a list of possible answers for that
scenario. The game will tell you if you select the correct answer or
not. You will also be provided with the rationale for the correct
answer of each scenario.

- Copyright Issues - There
are many issues related to copyright. Not only the issue of using
copyrighted materials but also the issue of who owns the copyright to a
course created on a college server - the faculty or the college. This
is still being debated on some of our campuses. The first issue of
using copyrighted materials is that they should follow the same
standard guidelines as any other printed material. The second issue of
who owns the copyright is a much more volatile issue that continues to
be a topic of debate.

- Validity of Resources on the Web - Many
students need to be shown the skills to evaluate Web sites, so that
they reference valid sites when doing their research for their
assignments. If there is going to be research by the student in your
course, it is a good idea to include a lesson or tutorial on how to
critically evaluate a Web site. This may simply be accomplished by
linking to your school's library Web pages which most likely has some
sort of tutorial already created as a reference for library research
students.

- YouTube - a video hosting service, is experiencing tremendous growth...and that's not sitting well with
established media. From an educational standpoint, there is much
potential to use this service to enhance learning. A word of caution,
however, some videos are very educational, but not in the sense we as
educators would generally like them to be! Like everything else online,
the space is open to abuse and inappropriate content.

The%20Human%20Brain&type=interactive&colour=ffffff&height=670&width=800Interactive tour of the brain (via Ray)
- I'm a sucker for any type of brain tour...this is a simple overview
with limited "interactivity". Still, it presents the key aspects of the
brain and related functionality in an easy to follow format.
- Very little doubt exists that web-based applications
have a strong future. For years, we heard hype about how the web was
the new platform for deploying software. The chatter didn't translate
into reality. It's amazing how much of a difference a few years make!
Google's work with Gmail, numerous office-type applications (Writely),
and Microsoft's lauch of Live all support the movement of much of our
computing from the desktop to the web. ZDNet has a listing of various
products in the web office space.
- Games
(not only video games) can be effective learning tools. The adaptive
nature of many gaming environments mimics real life - we mak a decision
and it changes things, which means our next decision is based on an
altered environment. Many learning approaches often fail to capture the
"altered state" because decisions are made in a vacuum. Games change as
we change. Gaming for Education is a wonderful collection of games,
research, books, and web sites.
- I encountered this listing of neuroscience lectures from Mind Hacks.
The videos are at times choppy (and postage stamp size), but still a
useful collection - covering subjects such as emotions, cognitions,
memory, language, and brain structure. Advances in neuroscience are
giving educators a new view into the learning process and ways to
optimize the experience for learners. What used to be largely
theoretical machinations of educators is receiving strong support from
latest brain-based research.
- I have yet to come across a complete timeline of how learning technologies have developed over the last 10 years.
The Learning Technologies Timeline project provides an overview of the
history (and attempts to predict the future) of development. Activity
in the learning technology space has exploded over the last decade - a
clear overview of this stage of development would be nice...
- Crash Course in Learning Theory
- this is an accessible exploration of learning. Creating Passionate
Users does a nice job incorporating images in explaining ideas and
concepts. A great example of the use of images and emotion to assist in
learning. The article explores many commonly understood strategies to
motivating and fostering learning (Gagne's 9 events of instruction,
brain-based learning, learning styles, multiple intelligence, etc.).
The author asserts that dry academic writing inhibits learning...where
a more conversational tone improves learning. From my experience, I
agree. However, I find that writing that appeals highly to emotions and
interest, sometimes sacrifices cognitive elements (such as this "bogus
research" on reading, seeing, hearing). I'm not sure what it is, but a
nice graphic seems to communicate so! well that critical thinking takes
