Program Profile
The Ivy Tech State College’s Environmental Design Program provides career education in the creation of safe, functional, productive and aesthetically pleasing interior and exterior environments for work, home, health and recreation.

Students will investigate the interaction of social and cultural perception and usage of the physical environment, the interrelationship of human beings and natural ecosystems, conceptual designs and the problem-solving process, building codes and legal regulations, materials technology and methods of construction, custom detailing and manufacturing, product selection and specification, integration of mechanical, lighting and acoustical systems, great designers and historical styles, and project management.

Visual and verbal presentations allow students to develop their design vocabulary and professional communication skills. Representational drawings and model studies of design projects are developed for exploration of the visual principles, color application and 3-D organization of enclosures, as they relate to environments.

The needs of students and business and industry are continually being assessed through student surveys, advisory boards, and community involvement by faculty and staff. In addition, the Environmental Design faculty utilizes teaching and learning techniques that will furnish students with the skills necessary to meet the ever-changing needs of the work place.

Career Options
The Ivy Tech State College’s Environmental Design Program offers students three different career paths; the associates of science degree (AS), the associates of applied science degree (AAS), and the career development certificate (CDC).

The Associates of Science Degree (AS) prepares a student for transfer to a four-year program or institution while providing comprehensive foundation skills expected of a competent practitioner in the field.

The associates of Applied Science Degree (AAS) provides the comprehensive technical, administrative, ethical and communications skills necessary to work competently within a student’s chosen field. Regional electives allow students to choose from a variety of exciting concentrations.

The Career Development Certificate (CDC) provides courses to develop introductory or specialized skills within a student’s chosen field. The certificate is designed for the student who needs skills for immediate employment or wants to broaden their knowledge base for their current employment. Students wishing to continue their education can transfer the credits from the certificate to the Environmental Design AAS or AS degree program.

Interior Design Specialty Curriculum
The Interior Design program offers students courses in project design and development including space planning, furniture and finish selection, sustainable design, safety and barrier-free guidelines, and project management, all incorporated into competent and creative projects.

Students are connected to the industry through student memberships in IIDA or ASID, field trips, guest speakers, community service projects and an experienced and dedicated team of faculty, led by NCIDQ certified instructors. Field study opportunities are also provided which allow students to experience first-hand the daily operations and organization of a successful interior design firm.

Students will develop an exit portfolio and resume that demonstrates the skills and knowledge for one of many concentration areas of Interior Design, including Sustainable Design, Contract Design, Manufactured Housing, Visual Merchandising, Hospitality and Home & Garden.

Garden Design Specialty Curriculum
The Garden Design Specialty provides students courses in the creation of beautiful, natural and sustainable landscapes that integrate with home and work environments. Internship opportunities allow students to experience the project management techniques of a garden or nursery center.

Students will develop an exit portfolio and resume that demonstrates the skills and knowledge for one of the many career options including garden and landscape design, horticulture, grounds management, greenhouse operations, distribution and sales for the garden industry, conservation, and employment with the parks department or botanical gardens.

Student Outcomes
Students will develop an exit portfolio, a resume and the communications skills that demonstrate the practices, knowledge and experiences necessary to work in the field of Environmental Design.
