Office Administration (OAD) Curriculum

Several of the OAD courses listed below help prepare a student to take the associated MOS Certification Exam. The MOS Exam will be taken during the 7th week of the 8-week class, with an opportunity to re-test during the 8th week (if necessary). Cost of the exam and a practice exam CD are generally billed in addition to tuition when a student registers for one of these courses. For a complete description of a course, go to Course Outlines , select the area of study and then the individual course from the drop down list.

*Important Software Note: Most courses in this area require software programs that are part of the Microsoft Office Professional Suite. A full version with educational pricing is available through Ivy Tech's Online Bookstore at the Terre Haute Campus for approximately $70.

OAD 103 Introduction to Computers with Word Processing
*MS Word 2003 with MOS Certification Prep

Prerequisites: Typing proficiency 30 GWAM

Introduces the concepts of word processing systems. Offers hands-on experience in the operation of a specific word processing software package.

OAD110 Presentation Graphics
*MS PowerPoint 2003 with MOS Certification Prep

Prerequisites: None

Provides "hands-on" experience and familiarizes students with design and layout techniques and practical applications of business presentations.

OAD114 Desktop Publishing
*MS Publisher 2003

Prerequisites: OAD103

Emphasizes the production of publication-quality documents. Attention is given to design, layout, and production techniques. Fonts, graphics, and page composition are integrated into camera-ready documents using computer software and hardware.

OAD121 Office Procedures & Team Dynamics

Prerequisites: OAD019 Keyboarding

Prepares the student to understand and carry out responsibilities assigned in a business office. Topics include telephone techniques, office equipment, travel and conference arrangements, professional development, research techniques, time and stress management, and business ethics.

OAD214 Multimedia Design

Prerequisites: OAD103

Create multimedia presentations for primary delivery via the Internet. Attention is given to design and layout principles and production techniques. Color and editing graphics and photographs will be introduced. Students will also apply their design skills to preparing documents for electronic publishing on the World Wide Web.

OAD 216 Business Communication

Prerequisites: ENG111

Emphasizes analysis of business communication environments-cultural, organizational, technological, international, and interpersonal-and the use of communications standards to direct the choice of oral and written communication methods and techniques. Includes practice in writing a variety of messages, with an emphasis on the potential impact of the message on the receiver as a basis for planning and delivering effective business communications.

OAD218 Spreadsheets
*MS Excel 2003 with MOS Certification Prep

Prerequisites: "C" or better in MAT050 (or demonstrated competency)

Provides an in-depth understanding of worksheet design, charting, what-if analysis, worksheet database creation and manipulation, and OLE. Knowledge will be applied to various business applications. Integration of spreadsheets in other applications will be addressed

OAD222 Database Applications
*MS Access 2003 with MOS Certification Prep

Prerequisites: "C" or better in ENG025 & ENG032 (or demonstrated competency)

Provides “hands-on” experience and familiarizes students with
the creation and management of a database.

OAD204 Outlook
*MS Outlook with MOS Certification Prep

Prerequisite: CIS101

Provides students with the ability to utilize email components. Topics include managing schedules, managing folders and contacts, organizing work using tasks and notes, and customizing and using advanced email features.
